Burley In Wharfedale Census

Family Histories

Abraham Clough & Family

Contributor: Norman Doughty, Leeds

"I found my great granddad Abraham Clough living at 2 Clarence Place with the rest of his family except my grandmother who was in domestic service in Menston at the time age 19.  Her parents and (I think) her brother were dead before I was born but I can remember her 4 younger sisters (my great aunts) as old ladies when I was a child.  Annie and Marian had both married and moved to Leeds and Helena and Emily never married but shared a house in West Bowling Bradford.  I believe Helena had been the local midwife or district nurse.  My grandmother Kate Elizabeth returned to Burley for her marriage to Timothy Wright on 20/08/1904.  The witnesses were her sister Helena and George Vine (the verger I presume).  She died in Leeds age 32 in 1913.

Abraham Clough married Mary Ann Canty in Hull in 1879.  Her family were from Grimsby where her father was a shipwright.  (I didn't realise the Victorians got around quite so much).

Most of these folk are on the 1901 Census.

Back Row: Emily Clough, Unknown, Helena Clough, Abraham Clough, Annie Clough & Mary Ann Clough

Seated: Timothy Wright & Kate Elizabeth Clough

Front: Marian Clough

I can recognise Emily, Helena, Annie and Marian from my childhood. Tim Wright and Kate Elizabeth from other photos. Abraham and Mary Ann are an educated guess from the way Mary Ann is holding Annie. Maybe the lady in the black dress is Abraham's sister but just guessing."
