Henry Cuthbert of 'Latherbank'
Contributor: Arthur Cuthbert, Ontario, Canada
"Enjoyed 'visiting' the village, in which I was born and raised, very much. 206 West Terrace was my address and Grandfather Henry Cuthbert, gardener at Wharfeside for many years lived in the little cottage at the end of Leatherbank. Granddad always insisted that the name was Latherbank, due to the ever present white foam caused by the rushing waters.
My brother Raymond left Burley for Canada in 1946. He worked for a time as a delivery boy for Midgley the butcher down Main Street. At the time Vic Thackeray worked there too.

My wife, Sylvia, nee Renton was also born and raised in the village, in the house next door to what used to be Carr's shop on Main St. Her granny lived at Burley Woodhead, (26) in your list of occupants. Her father Harry, uncle Lance and auntie Daisy are shown in a picture of Burley Woodhead school (illustration XX in the Warwick book "Our Schools").

Top Picture: Granddad Cuthbert's house at the end of Leatherbank taken in 1972.The house must have been one of the earliest in the village as it bears the SEA LEVEL marking cut into the stone by the front door. The picture shows the house without it's neighbour (the Ned Leaf property).
Bottom Picture: The north aspect of the cottages at Greenholme taken in 1960.The Falkinghams, Hirds, Fallons and Jones families lived there when we were kids."
