Burley In Wharfedale Census

Newsletter No. 3

No.3/  September2005

Hello Again!

Welcome to the third edition of the 'Burley Census Website' Newsletter.

The Burley Census Website is officially one year old this month. To celebrate this, and England's Ashes win over Australia, you'll be pleased to know that the Burley Census Website has been significantly updated to include a host of new features and enhancements. Check it out at:

www.burleycensus.net

As well as the full 1901 census, the website now provides FREE access to the complete census results of 1881. The 1881 census can be searched by surname, address, birthplace and occupation. So, you could find out who lived in your house in 1881 and 1901 or what happened to a relative and their family over this 20 year span.

Using the Census Index to search by surname or birthplace you can now trace any resident across all five censuses (1851, 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901) simultaneously.

And that's not all! The website now contains the following new features:

  • a picture quiz to test your local knowledge and powers of observation;
  • Newspaper articles of significant events in Burley's history;
  • more old photographs/postcards of Burley In Wharfedale & Burley Woodhead;
  • Updated statistics, including a comparison of data across all five censuses;
  • plus many many more small improvements and enhancements.

There has been a massive response to the website since its launch in September 2004 (over 33,000 unique visits) with respondents from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Kuwait, The Netherlands, USA and Canada. Thanks to everyone who has contacted me with their comments and contributions. I would particularly welcome contributions of old photographs, family histories, newspaper articles or any other documents for possible inclusion on the website (I will copy and return any material within a day or so if needs be).

Whatever your interest, be it genealogy, local history or just plain curiosity why not revisit www.burleycensus.net and see what you can discover. While you're there, please take a minute to complete the 'VISITOR SURVEY', which can be accessed from the website's homepage.

Have fun!

Cheers,

Garry
